So we are doing this!

We are going. This sentence carried so much weight. There were many things to plan out before leaving and not enough time. It's hard enough to plan a week's vacation for a family of five. How to the hell do you pack and get the things to another country. What to pack?! Do we need all the things we are used to? What can we get there? I knew we weren't moving to a third-world country and that I was thinking like a crazy person. But, when you become so comfortable with your everyday things, it's hard to think of not having them. I also researched prices, knowing that Iceland would be crazy expensive. I also knew you couldn't buy the same OTC drugs we regularly use at home. I brought medicine in case anyone got a cold; however, I forgot about Chris and me. I was hyper-focused on the kids; I completely forgot about the adults. Mom move, oops.
How is health care? Will it be hard to find a doctor to get the medication we are currently on? Iceland has socialized health care. As an American, I had no idea what that truly meant. We hear rumors about the countries that have socialized health care, not good things most of the time. So I made appointments for all three kids to see their PCP, dentists, and the same for me. I have a hypothyroid, so I was worried about blood draws and switching meds. One of my kids is on ADHD medication. I wanted to get a few months' worth of medication to give us time to settle in. Unfortunately, I had to deal with the insurance company to get a three-month supply of all the meds.
I also enrolled the kids in sports they usually played to have as much time with friends as possible before leaving. Volunteering to coach Evelyn's soccer team was a bad idea looking back on it now. Having two kids with three practices a week plus games, ugh, why did I do this to myself. Oh yeah, the kids! I'm happy I did this for the kids, as hard as it was.
Then there was the construction in the house and getting a list of what still needed to be done and who was doing the work. We have a contractor we always use for work Chris and I couldn't do or didn't have time to complete ourselves. You can read more about this topic in construction posts.
Once I wrote everything out on a list and everything scheduled, I was set! Well, at least that's what I thought...
